Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: My DVD doesn’t play

Answer: Occasionally, DVDs can get dirty. Oil, grease, or dust (some of these can transfer when you touch a DVD) can cause a DVD to fail when loaded into a player. Carefully check the surface of the DVD and if there are smudges visible on the surface, you may need to “clean” the DVD. There are disc cleaning kits you can purchase at your local Best Buy or similar store - or you can “wash” the disc yourself. If you wash the disc, use mild diswashing liquid, use your hands and hold the disc under running water while cleaning. Dry with a soft cloth - do NOT use paper towels or any other harsh material. Once dry, try the disc again. If it continues to fail and you purchased the disc within the past 30 days, you may contact our support team for a replacement. There is a $6.00 handling charge for shipment. See the contact section of the website for information on returns.

Question: There are black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. What are those?

Answer: Most of our DVDs are produced in wide-screen format. If you have a wide screen television that supports 16×9 or similar formats, you should be able to see the entire picture. If you have a “standard” television, you will see these bars - called “letterbox” in the industry, these bars allow the picture to provide you with ALL of the information captured by the cameras while in production.

Question: Will your video products be available in High-Definition?

Answer: Most of the material shot by our teams is in HD (High Definition). We have downconverted most material for our initial releases. However, as HD gains in popularity, you can look for HD versions of the most popular titles to be released.

Question: Are these videos appropriate for children?

Answer: The decision to share any product/video with a child is the responsibility of the parent or guardian. It is the producer’s opinion that the age ranges listed on the packaging be used as a guide ONLY. You are the best judge of what your child can and cannot appreciate or understand. Note that a special child’s DVD, Kids Love Fire Engines! has been produced specifically for younger people. There are no dangerous situations shown and care has been taken to give younger people an appreciation for the fire service, without scaring them. All videos do include emergency response footage. Note that The Ultimate Sacrifice is very moving and can be emotional. Use your best judgement when sharing this title with young people under the age of 10.

Question: What is the Los Angeles Fire Department Historical Society?

Answer: The LAFD Historical Society along with the William Rolland Firefighter Educational Institute works to preserve the history of firefighting in Los Angeles, in addition to providing education in fire safety and prevention. The primary museum, in Hollywood, California, is currently open on Saturdays from 10AM until 4PM. The Harbor Museum, in San Pedro, California, is open on Saturdays from 10AM until 3PM. Additional information can be found on the museum website.

Question: How does the Historical Society benefit from my purchase of DVDs?

Answer: The LAFD Historical Society receives the bulk of net profits from the sale of each DVD. As a non-profit organization, the LAFD Historical Society uses the funds for operations, to support related charity programs, and for the Fallen Firefighter Memorial in Hollywood.

Question: Are there other things I can do to support the museum or the memorial?

Answer: Yes! The LAFD Historical Society has a number of programs, ranging from memorial brick pavers that you can create in the name of a loved one (and placed in the memorial plaza), to corporate, educational, and personal programs. Contact Director of Operations, Frank Borden, (Assistant Chief, LAFD, Ret) at (323) 464-2727 for additional information.
