Production Update

Here is an update on production of DVDs as of November 15, 2006:

- Kids Love Fire Engines:

Available and shipping. Initial orders were above expectations and a three week production delay may have caused some inconvenience for distributors. Inventory is now readily available. Web purchases should be made via this site or Amazon.com. In-person sales are available at the LAFD Museum and at various dealers around the U.S. and Canada.

- Firefighters of the LAFD, Volume One:

Production nearly complete. All packaging is complete. Will ship later in December.

- Firefighters of the LAFD, Volume Two:

Production midway complete. All packaging is complete. Will ship later in December.

- The Ultimate Sacrifice:

Midway through production. Key interviews conducted and all historical footage has been gathered. Post production process must be completed. All packaging is complete. Will ship in winter 2007.

Los Angeles Times Kids Section Features “FIRE!”

The Los Angeles Times is running a wonderful history on the Los Angeles Fire Department. Authored by Nancy Smiler Levinson, the multi-part story explains the early days of the LA Fire Department, how the fire service in LA originated, the use of horses to move men and equipment, and the eventual transition to motorized apparatus.

It’s a fun, engaging story and it’s ideal for any kid, or any family. The LA Times is noted for publishing stories unique to children and this series is a must-read.

Change Your Clock - Change Your Battery

Hey, kids! Tell your parents how important it is to not only change the time this coming Saturday night (the time goes back one hour - fall back vs. spring forward) - but to change the batteries in your smoke alarms.

The news is filled with fall fire activity - serious brush fires in the west and structure fires in the east. Don’t risk losing a pet or family member to fire. Be the star in your household and bring up how cool it would be to replace batteries for a few bucks, rather than risk replacing the house for a lot more cash…

Getting the shot means getting dirty - and wet

A lot of people have asked about the work involved in gathering video material for firefighting videos. In addition to the ongoing research and study related to the creation of the LAFD education series of videos, there is time spent in the field capturing crews at work. While this often involves traffic accidents and EMS (emergency medical services) calls, fire remains the primary objective.

Our team is equipped with protective gear and radios and we have been given instruction on how to interact with department members while on scene at an incident. And, as exciting as it may sound to ride out with a fire company, it is serious work. And, as a part of that work, we get seriously dirty - and on occasion, very wet!

When we’re on scene, we assign one individual as a producer and spotter and the other as a videographer. The producer/spotter acts to ensure the safety of the team and seeks story angles or important shots to capture. Teamwork is important not only for firefighters, but for our production crew as well.

Protecting our equipment is another aspect of shooting video that becomes serious business when shooting video at a working fire scene. Smoke, water, and debris fly through the air, often in directions you aren’t expecting and with tremendous force. Our HD video cameras are delicate and intricate pieces of equipment and water and related foreign objects are not good for long-term functionality.

Following fire-related incidents, we carefully clean and inspect each piece of equipment. Batteries are recharged after every shoot - but smokey and wet conditions result in extra care being given to each piece of gear we use.

The results speak for themselves - high quality, exciting, and dramatic images of firefigthers doing their job. It’s just one reason why firefighting videos are tremendous fun to watch.

Kids Love Fire Engines Now Complete

The first title in the Los Angeles Fire Department Museum & Memorial education series is now complete. Kids Love Fire Engines is being mastered and will be available before the end of the month.

A lot of small details have been changed during the past month, and as this is the initial product, some additional time was taken to ensure a quality product.

Formal release will follow pre-release copies to reviewers and LAFD officers. As soon as the title is available, the purchase links in products will allow you to execute an online order. Shipping typically takes one week.

Kids Love Fire Engines is nearing completion. Our team is adding a few bits on helicopters and once in place, the show will be ready for mastering.

Following shortly behind will be Class 1 Fire Engines. While this DVD has similar content to Kids Love Fire Engines, it is designed for a wider audience, includes some rescue and fire footage not shown in the kids DVD, and has more detail and behind the scenes footage.

Kids Love Fire Engines is nearing completion. Pre-orders will be accepted, beginning on June 10th, 2006. Orders will be filled within two to four weeks from receipt. If you’re interested in learning more, check out the coming attractions clip from the upcoming show (required QuickTime - Mac or PC).

Production continues for Class 1 Fire Engines, Class 1 Firefighters, and The Ultimate Sacrifice. All three of these titles will be available during the summer of 2006. And it’s already June - so come back and check out the upcoming trailers (to be posted by June 5).
